Wood fencing remains one of the most popular choices for backyards, and for good reason it's versatile, natural-looking, and available in a range of styles. Here are the most common types of wood fencing to consider.

Privacy Fencing (Solid Board)

Boards are placed edge-to-edge with no gaps, creating full visual privacy. This is the go-to choice for backyards where blocking sightlines from neighbors or the street is the priority.

Board on Board Fencing

Boards overlap on alternating sides of the rail, creating privacy from both angles with a more finished look on both sides of the fence a popular option for shared property lines.

Picket Fencing

The classic look evenly spaced vertical boards, usually shorter in height, that define a boundary without blocking the view. Popular for front yards and gardens.

Shadow Box Fencing

Boards alternate front-to-back on the same rail with small gaps, offering a "see-through" texture and airflow while still limiting direct sightlines a nice option that looks finished from both sides.

Split Rail Fencing

An open, rustic style using horizontal rails between posts, typically without pickets. It's more about marking a boundary or containing livestock than providing privacy.

Lattice Top Fencing

A solid privacy fence topped with a decorative lattice section, adding height and airflow while softening the look of a tall, solid fence.

Cedar vs. Pressure Treated for These Styles

Any of these styles can be built in cedar or pressure treated pine. Cedar offers a more refined natural look and slightly better rot resistance out of the box, while pressure-treated pine is the more budget-conscious choice.
